A Place of Saftey

Psalms 91:1 declares, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the almighty”. Let’s talk about how to get to the secret place first. Notice the Bible says He that “dwelleth”. The word dwelleth is a continuation, not a one-time thing. So we are commanded to pray continually, not just when we get into trouble or we have a need. When we, God’s people, build a daily relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ we begin to experience His presence in a very real way. This is a privilege that belongs to the children of God only…not the world and not religious people.  Only those who know the leading of the Holy Spirit are the children of God (Romans 8:14).

As you begin to “dwelleth” in the secret place, the Lord becomes very close and real to you. The reason Jesus becomes very real to you is because of surrender. As you surrender in prayer,  the Holy Spirit begins to reveal Jesus to you in a very real way. So we must build this relationship by continually separating ourselves to the Lord to seek His face daily. As you begin to seek the Lord daily, His presence begins to fill and surround your life. This is where you and I find safety. This is where satan and his demons can’t find you because you are under the shadow of the Almighty.

Just like a deer when it is being pursued by a predator, the deer will always run to the water…why? Because the deer knows if he can get to the water the predator will not be able to smell his scent and therefore the deer can hide from his enemy. It is the same for you and me. When satan is pursuing us, all we have to do is run to the water (the presence of Jesus Christ) and we will find protection because God will hide us in the secret place.

What Is the Secret Place?

The secret place is not prayer like so many believe…the secret place is a place that belongs only to God’s people. If the secret place was just prayer,  the world and other religions would have the privilege that you and I have. Muslims pray more than most Christians, how about those in the world who always pray when they need something? They treat God like a slot machine, they call upon Him only in times of trouble…there is no relationship. So what is the secret place? Well, let’s look at what the Bible says about the secret place. Ps 31:20 “Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence” The presence of Jesus Christ is the secret place. It is that tangible presence that changes lives.

That presence cannot be explained, it has to be experienced. It is this same presence that makes people fall under the power of God, it is the same presence that makes people weep and sometimes laugh. This presence is foolish to the world and religious people because they are blinded. But to God’s people, it is life changing. Remember the presence of the Lord is Jesus Himself, you cannot separate the presence and Jesus. When you experience His presence you are experiencing Jesus Himself. This is a supernatural experience, not just some mental or goosebump feeling. The presence of Jesus Christ changes you…and draws you closer to the Lord.

hiding under the shadow

The Shadow of the Almighty

Once you begin dwelling in the secret place on a daily basis, you will see a great change within you. This is what separates you from religious people. They know him…you know Him personally. Jesus becomes very real to you and now the Holy Spirit begins to lead you in the path of the Lord. Now that you have this daily relationship, you begin to see His mighty hand of protection. Not only on you but your children, family and your calling of the Lord- whether it be a business, career or your ministry. This shadow overshadows everything that belongs to you and no demon can touch anything that belongs to you.

I am not saying you won’t have troubles. What I am saying is that when trouble comes, the Lord will make a way out. When satan comes to destroy, God will protect. When a demon leads your children astray, the Holy Spirit will draw them back into the house of the Lord-total protection under this shadow for those who “dwelleth” in the secret place on a daily basis. So to end this article for today, remember never take lightly your time in the secret place. It is the presence of Jesus Christ that we seek after not gifts, miracles or anything else, just Jesus. You will find everything that you need in this lifetime and live in complete victory.

How to Find the Secret Place

The secret place (the presence of Jesus) can be experienced through worship, reading the Word and prayer. I am going to talk about prayer only in this section. Prayer is not a place for you to go and tell God all your problems, it a place to go and wait upon the Lord to hear His voice. I am not saying you shouldn’t ask for needs to be met or express your feelings to the Lord, but the main benefit of waiting on the Lord is to experience His presence. This is where His voice becomes clear and His ways become known. As you wait for the Lord in prayer, His presence will become very real during this time.

That doesn’t mean you should do a lot of talking or get up and stop waiting, just the opposite, continue waiting in His presence because this is where His voice will become clear…and at times He will begin to deal with that hurt, anger or pain within your heart. In quietness there is power. Some Christians think they need to do a lot of talking when they feel His touch, but if you will learn the power of quietness and be still, you will begin experiencing miracles in your own prayer time.
