**PODCAST Transcript** of Total Dependency On The Lord

Today I want to talk to you about being Total Dependency On The Lord. Because I think many times we feel that it’s our own strength, it’s our own ability and our own desire, really, to seek the Lord and to understand and study his word. But I’m going to show you through the life of David how he so depended on the Lord that it wasn’t himself. He emptied himself and totally depended on the Lord. And I believe that we as believers, if we start to really depend on God and not ourselves, we will see a much deeper understanding, a much deeper desire, a hunger for the things of God.

So take your Bibles and turn to Psalms 119 and let me show you something about David’s life. Why he became a mighty man of God, why God could use him. And He would do the same for you; but you first have to surrender to self, you’ve got to get self out of the way and totally depend on the Lord. Now this could happen during prayer. You know, there’s times when you may not feel like praying, but the Lord wants to take you into such a deeper realm with Him in His presence. But how do we get there?

Sometimes we think we do it on our own and we begin to sacrifice and do stuff on our own, but it’s not that way at all. It’s really, it’s when the Holy Spirit draws you, then you can really pray. When the Holy Spirit gives you the hunger for His word and begins to reveal to you revelations from His word. That’s when prayer and Bible study comes alive. And that’s what I believe each one of you wants today. That’s why I’m going to show you this powerful truth and how to have Total Dependency On The Lord.

Look at Psalms 119, verse 33, and I’m just going to show you how David depended on the Lord. Because really it’s not our ability. It’s not our desire. You see? It’s not even our desire. All we do is say, “Lord, I can’t do it,” and He does it. When you surrender like that Jesus takes over. The Holy Spirit begins to quicken your heart. And when He quickens you, then you pray, then you call out to the Lord. Now this is going to be a quite short program today, but I just felt that I needed to talk to you about total dependence. And I’m going to show you through the life of David, through his dependency, how he had a very close relationship with God Almighty. And you can too.

Remember Jesus said in John 15:7: If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, [then] ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done … So we must abide in Him. We must allow His word to abide in us. That is a commandment. And not only a commandment, that is a blessing. That is our … the word I’m trying to say is … that is something that belongs only to God’s children. It does not belong to the world, because they have not accepted the price that Jesus paid on the cross. So when you and I begin to seek the Lord and we struggle and we struggle and we wonder why some have a prayer life that’s amazing and others don’t, why some know the word by the heart and others don’t – it’s all done by the Holy Spirit. And He is no respecter of persons. So what happens is, is that you have to depend on the Holy Spirit. You have to depend totally on the Lord and not yourself. And when you do this, your life will change. Total Dependency On The Lord

Look at verse 33, and I’m going to start reading with this: Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. David’s saying, “Lord, teach me. I’m not trying to do it on my own. Teach me Lord.” Here’s a mighty man of God, a king of all of Israel, anointed, seen great and mighty things, touched of God. And he’s saying, “Lord, I cannot do it. You teach me. I’m totally depending on you Lord to teach me.” And that’s all the Holy Spirit is looking for today – for us to totally depend on Him. As you depend on Him and He teaches you, then you shall keep it onto the end.

Look at verse 34: Give me understanding …  David’s like, “Lord, I looked through your law. I can’t understand it. Give me an understanding. Give me the understanding, Lord that I need.”  Then he says:  and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. Once the Holy Spirit gives you an understanding, you will begin to observe it with all of your heart. The word of God will become exciting to you. It will become alive to you. And you will begin to love God’s word. And now, as He’s giving you understanding and as you’re falling in love with the word, then guess what happens? Your life changes. Your life becomes exciting. Because now you can open the Bible and you can understand it. And now you can open the Bible and see revelations that you’ve never seen before. It’s just a powerful thing about the Christian life. The spiritual part of the Christian life is exciting. And we must depend on the Lord for all who walk with him. And as you depend on Him, He will open His word to you. He will reveal, Jesus said. Remember it is the Holy Spirit who reveals Jesus to us, who reveals Jesus to us in a real way. Not a religious way. A real way. A one-on-one relationship.

Look at verse 35: Make me … David says … Make me to go in the path of thy commandments … “Lord, I can’t even live this life without you. Make me to go in the right way that you want me to go. Make me Lord to be pleasing in your sight. Make me. Help me.” Do you see the dependency that David’s had in here? It’s amazing. If you and I were to live like this, you will see your life change completely because no longer are you depending on your own strength. No longer are you depending on your own knowledge. Now, you’re depending on Jesus. Now, you’re depending on the Holy Spirit to do everything for you.

Be Completely Dependant on The Holy Spirit

Be Completely Dependant on The Holy Spirit

Look at verse 36. He goes on to say: Incline my heart unto thy testimonies … Incline my heart. Verse 37: Turn away mine eyes ... Do you see the total dependency here? It is amazing. And you and I, all we have to do is to live like this. All we have to do is be totally dependent on God. Not on ourselves, but on the Holy Spirit and He will change our life. He will begin to take over our life, because now we’re not saying, “Lord, I can do this. Don’t worry about it.”  No, no, no. Now that we’re saying, “Holy Spirit, I can do nothing without you. Please help me. This is Total Dependency On The Lord ” And when David said: Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity … he was saying, “Lord, I can’t even stop looking at filth. Please help me. Lord, I can’t even stop looking at sin. Help me.” And the Holy Spirit will do that. You know why? Because it’s not a natural thing. It’s all a spiritual thing. So when you begin to ask the Holy Spirit to help you, what’s He do? He begins to take out the bad desires of your heart and He places godly desires within your heart.  He changes your life from the inside out. That is the powerful thing about the Christian life. I’ll tell you. Thank you Jesus for that.

Now verse 38: Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear. Establish your word Lord. Make your word sure in my heart. Make your word strong in my heart. Now I’ll never walk away from you.  And people, as you depend on the Lord like this, you’re going to be strong and you’re going to be bold. Like Proverbs 28:1 says: … the righteous are bold as a lion.  And that’s the way you’ll be, because now that word is established in your heart. Nobody can tell you it’s different. Now you know the word of God for yourself, and that’s the powerful thing about dependency.

Look at verse 39: Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good. Verse 40, and I love this one: Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me … You know what that “quicken me” is? You know what quicken means? Quicken is the way the Holy Spirt touches our hearts. He touches us. And only God’s children can discern this. Only they who are led by the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that quickens us. He nudges us, if I can say. And what you do is you get just a little bit of God’s presence. That’s the Holy Spirit nudging you to do something. To pray. Usually, He nudges you to pray.

David said: … quicken me in thy righteousness … Because it’s the Holy Spirit that leads us. We’re not led by feelings. We’re not led by what we see or what we hear. But we are led by the Holy Spirit, and one of the ways He leads us is by quickening us. And so, be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. And I’ll tell you, it is really that simple. Anything you want to change in your Christian life, all you have to do is focus on that and seek the Lord about that. So let’s say you wanted to have a greater prayer life. You wanted to have greater experiences with God one-on-one in prayer. Well, all you have to do is totally depend on the Lord to do it. You can’t learn this stuff. I can’t tell you how to have a deeper walk with the Lord. You have to go and ask the Lord to draw you. To draw you. And as you begin to depend on Him to draw you, He will shape your life to Total Dependency On The Lord.

Don’t Be Religious…Be A God Pursuer

Don't Be Religious...Be A God Pursuer

You know one of my first prayers that I’ve ever prayed, “Lord, I just want to know you. Don’t tell me about church. Don’t tell me about religion. Don’t tell me about traditions. Don’t tell me about all the rules and all this. I just want to know you.” And people I tell you when I prayed that, the Lord began to visit my life.  He shook my life. Because I’m not looking for signs. I’m not looking for signs and wonders. I’m not looking for feelings. I’m not looking for anything. All I said is, “Lord, I want to know you.” And He loves when His people will come to Him and just want to know Him. That’s right. Because I don’t go into prayer just to beg and ask for all my needs to be met. I love to go into prayer and just say, “Lord, I just wanna be closer to you.” Because I love Him and because of what He’s done for me. And He becomes so real to me. He’s become a reality. Not a far distanced God. Not a religion. But a reality. And when He becomes a reality to you, you will do anything for Him; and nobody can shake you on that because now you know Him.  You don’t know just about Him. You know Him.  Because He is a living God who wants a one-on-one relationship with every one of you listening today. Never forget that. And never let anybody tell you different.

The word of God teaches us that He is a one-on-one relationship God. He loves to fellowship and commune with His people, one-on-one. Yes, it’s important to pray with your children, your spouse. You know, pray with others, agree with them. That’s all important. That’s all very important. But there’s nothing like getting alone, separating yourself, one-on-one with no one but Jesus. What happens when you do that? The Holy Spirit begins to do a mighty work within you. And He begins to reveal the realness of Jesus. He begins to reveal to you His presence, His power, and His plan for your life. Yes, that’s right. That’s how you find God’s will for your life. It’s by this one-on-one fellowship.

You know you could read a hundred books and somebody teach me how to find God’s will. It will not do nothing for you. All it will do is give you an idea. It will give you direction. But, when you get one-on-one with God Almighty Himself, He begins to reveal His will to you. He begins to reveal his purpose to you. And that’s the exciting part about the Christian life.

So let me go down through these one more time, just so you can see how David depended on the Lord so much and how much we should depend on the Lord – for everything. That’s right. You cannot struggle. You cannot just struggle. Because when you struggle, you’re saying, “Lord, I’m doing it myself. I don’t need you. I can do it myself now.” No, no, no. Surrender. Quit the struggling. “Lord, I wanna be closer to you. Lord, I wanna be closer to you. I wanna know your presence.” And what do you do? You just ask. You surrender. You totally depend on Him. That’s it.  And when you depend on him, the Holy Spirit takes over your life; the Holy Spirit takes over your prayer life; the Holy Spirit takes over your hunger for His word. Now when you open the Bible, scripture comes alive. Why? Because the Holy Spirit is behind it.

Be So Dependant On the Lord That He Becomes Your Life

Be So Dependant On the Lord That He Becomes Your Life

Without the Holy Spirit, the Bible is just another book. But when you mix in the Holy Spirit with the written word of God, this Bible becomes alive. This Bible becomes precious and the most amazing book you’ll ever read, because now the Holy Spirit is behind it. For the Bible says: … the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. [2 Corinthians 3:6] So it’s not just reading the Bible. The world reads the Bible at times and they don’t understand a thing. They just read it like another book. But when the Holy Spirit is there and He’s revealing to you secrets and revelations, boy, the Christian life becomes exciting doesn’t it?

Now, I’m going to go through it one more time real quick for you. In verse 33, David says, teach me O Lord; 34, give me understanding; 35, make me; 36, incline my heart; 37, turn away mine eyes; 38, stablish thy word; 39, turn away my reproach; and then 40, quicken me Lord, quicken me. So all these words that David prayed for dependency – total dependence on the Lord. And that’s the way you and I need to live every day of our life. And once you do, you will experience a glorious life.

Now let me show you one more thing and I’m going to close with this, I think. Lord willing. John chapter 15, verse 7. This is probably one of my favorite scriptures in the Bible because this is really how you get prayers answered. And it is only once you begin to depend on the Lord, He can begin to work in you and draw you to Him. That’s the key. That’s the whole key right there. He has to draw you. And after He draws you, then you will seek Him with all your heart. Look at John chapter 15, verse 7: If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what you will and it shall be done unto you.

But look at this. Look at the key to Total Dependency On The Lord. First Jesus says, “if”. So it is a choice. Many Christians today, sadly, they forsake prayer. They forsake that sacred time in the Lord’s presence. Now I’m not going to get all into that, into prayer, because that’s a whole teaching on itself; but it is a choice. “If” He says. So we must make that choice that we are going to spend time with Him. We are going to separate a little time every day, to be with Him, in His word. Because he says: If ye abide in me … And that means, when you abide in Him, that means you are seeking Him. You’re spending time in His presence. Not just begging Him for stuff. Not just telling Him all your problems. He knows everything. He wants us to seek Him. He wants us to just spend time with Him. Can you imagine that? God? He wants you to just spend time with Him.

I Live This Christian Life Not Just Teach It

And then He says: … and my words abide in you … So what’s that mean? That means you have to depend on the Holy Spirit to give you hunger, to enjoy the word, to seek out the word, to study the word. And you know what happens? Once you begin to depend on Him, He will begin giving you that hunger. He will begin opening revelations to you. He will begin opening secrets to you throughout God’s word. It will become exciting to you, people. I’m telling you. I have experienced this. That’s why I can teach this, because I know it. And I’m telling you, that’s when the word of God becomes exciting. It’s when the Holy Spirit gets involved. When you depend on Him to do everything, then it’s exciting. All you have to do is make that first step.

Jesus says, “If”. Are you willing? Do you want it? Then come. Abide in Him, He says. That’s it.  Make that decision. Make time for him. I don’t care what you have to do. Give up those friends that you have to spend so much time with. Give up a little bit of time on television. Shut that stupid television off if you have to. Get up an hour earlier. I don’t care what you have to do. Do it. The presence of Jesus is more important than anything else. Total Dependency On The Lord That’s where it begins. If you abide in Him, give Him your time, a little time every day, you’ll see your life changed.

Now, this is not a religious thing – we’ve got to do this, do that. No. You do it because you love Him. You do it because He paid the price for you. Now, let’s spend time with Him. Get to know Him. And as you get to know Him, and as you get to abide in Him, and as you get to know Him and His word abides in you, then prayers come to pass. Then you can ask and you see miracles in your life. That’s it. It’s all about that. He just wants relationship. He just wants total dependence on Him. If you can give Him that, He will shake your world. He will change your life. At times you’ll ask and that prayer will be answered before even the day’s over with. There’s times when prayers will come to pass before you even finish praying. Because all He looks for is those who will seek Him, spend time in His presence. In Jesus’ name. That’s it.
